Far Target Standards
Credit: Ben Stoeger
Setup: Ben Stoeger recommends setting this drill up at 25 yards. However, since I’m a ‘filthy poor’ and don’t have 25 yards of space at home, I’ve linked some scaled-down USPSA targets below to help you simulate the distance. Alternatively, you can just use a light switch or a piece of tape on the wall.
Procedure:
Draw and shoot 2 rounds, reload, and shoot 2 more rounds. Beginner: 5 seconds Intermediate: 4 seconds Advanced: 3.5 seconds. 10 repetitions.
Draw and shoot 1 round. Beginner: 2 seconds Intermediate: 1.5 seconds Advanced: 1.1 seconds. 10 repetitions.
Draw and engage the target with 2 rounds, then 2 rounds strong hand only, then 2 rounds weak hand only. Beginner: 8 seconds Intermediate: 5.2 seconds Advanced: 4.5 seconds. 10 Repetitions.
Draw and engage the target with 2 rounds, reload and engage with 2 rounds, reload and engage with 2 rounds. Beginner: 8 seconds Intermediate: 5.5 seconds Advanced: 4.5 seconds. 10 repetitions.
Draw and engage the target with 6 rounds. Beginner: 3.5 seconds Intermediate: 2.3 seconds Advanced: 2 seconds. 10 repetitions.
Goal: This drill set is designed to work on basic draw and reloading skills within the context of shots that are a little bit longer. The times are going to be easy on this one; hitting the center of the target consistently is the challenge. The start position for all of these drills is wrists above shoulders.
